SMS Opt-In Policy

Information about how we handle SMS messaging and your consent to receive text messages

About Petition the Majority

Petition the Majority is a civic engagement platform operated by Petition the Majority App LLC that helps citizens organize their networks to take coordinated action on congressional issues. Our platform enables users (Senders) to send advocacy campaigns to their contacts, providing information about important legislative matters and connecting them with their elected officials. SMS messages are sent from a local number operated by Petition the Majority App LLC on behalf of Senders on the platform.

How Users Opt-In to Receive SMS Messages

Contacts opt in by visiting a Sender's public join link (e.g. petitionthemajority.com/join/bernard) and completing the join form. SMS consent is a distinct, optional action collected via an unchecked checkbox with the following language:

“I agree to receive SMS messages from Petition the Majority on behalf of [Sender Name] about civic engagement campaigns. Msg & data rates may apply. Reply STOP to cancel.”

If consent is given, a confirmation SMS is sent by the Petition the Majority platform and the contact must reply YES to complete the double opt-in process. No messages are sent until confirmation is received.

What Messages Users Will Receive

Users who opt-in will receive SMS messages that:

  • Notify them when they receive a new civic engagement message or campaign
  • Include a link to view the full message content on our platform
  • Are sent only when a campaign organizer in their network sends them a message

Message Frequency: Messages are sent on an as-needed basis when campaigns are initiated. Message frequency varies depending on campaign activity.

Message and Data Rates

Message and data rates may apply. Standard messaging and data rates from your wireless carrier will apply to all SMS messages sent and received. Please check with your carrier for details about your messaging plan and any applicable charges.

Opt-Out Instructions

Users can opt-out of receiving SMS messages at any time by:

  • Replying STOP, NO, UNSUBSCRIBE, CANCEL, END, or QUIT to opt out
  • Contacting the sender to request removal from their network
  • Contacting us directly through the platform

Once a user opts out, they will no longer receive SMS notifications from our platform. To re-subscribe after opting out, users can reply START or UNSTOP to any message from our platform.

Data Privacy

Petition the Majority App LLC, operator of the Petition the Majority platform, respects user privacy and only uses phone numbers for the purpose of sending the SMS notifications to which users have consented. Phone numbers are stored securely and are not shared with third parties except as necessary to deliver SMS messages through our SMS service provider (Twilio).

All consent is tracked with timestamps in our database, including when consent was requested, when it was confirmed, and when users opt out. This information is maintained for compliance and record-keeping purposes.

Use Case

This SMS service is operated by Petition the Majority App LLC through the Petition the Majority platform and is used for civic engagement notifications to inform contacts when they have received campaign messages through our platform. Messages are sent on behalf of Senders (platform users) to facilitate democratic participation and civic engagement, allowing contacts to stay informed about important legislative issues and take action with their elected representatives.

Contacts can join a Sender's network without opting in to SMS. SMS consent is optional and not required to use Petition the Majority.
